Forty days ago we celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we recall the day on which he was presented in the Temple, offered to God his Father by Mary and Joseph and shown to his people. In their old age Simeon and Anna recognized him as their Lord. Today we celebrate his coming but we also look forward to the days of his passion. Simeon prophesied that this child would be a sign that would be rejected and that a sword would pierce his mother’s soul. Let us pray that as we recognise the light of Christ we may also be ready to follow him through suffering.
Collect
Lord Jesus Christ,
light of the nations and glory of Israel:
make your home among us,
and present us pure and holy
to your heavenly Father,
your God, and our God. Amen
