Unlike their neighbours the Greek and Phoenicians, the ancient Hebrews were, famously, landlubbers! For them the sea was a symbol of chaos, the manifestation of the uncontrollable power of nature. But they also believed that God, and God alone, could subdue the chaotic sea – whether through his creative word (as at the beginning of the Book of Genesis) or in leading his people through the Red Sea to freedom in the Exodus. As they sang in Psalm 29.3:
“The voice of the Lord is over the waters;the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters.”
And in verse 10:
“The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.”
When the sea of life is raging, Jesus comes to us – all we must do is surrender to him and trust that he is in command.
