Reflection
The festival of Christ the King is a useful reminder that Christ alone is the ultimate authority and not any earthly leader. Its celebration began in the Church of England in 1997. It falls on the last Sunday before Advent, as a culminating point in the Church’s year.
Christ radically transforms earthly notions of kingship.
He became king when he was lifted up in his crucifixion - but his “throne” was a cross
His royal crown was made of thorns, not gems
His kingdom is not about earthly power but love, justice, mercy, and forgiveness
Each one of us, is called, in our own small way, to be the herald of such a kingdom.
Collect of the Festival
Eternal Father,
whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven
that he might rule over all things as Lord and King:
keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit
and in the bond of peace,
and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
