Christmas

Happy Christmas!

The best commentary on Christmas is to be found in the Church’s worship texts. An ancient one, part of the Eucharistic Prayer for the day, says everything that matters:

“In Christ we see our God made visible – and so are caught up in love of the God we cannot see.”

Christ is the icon (image) of the invisible God (Colossians 1.15). Looking at Christ we see what God is really like and are enraptured by the vision of divine beauty. The simplicity and humility of the manger at Bethlehem is a powerful sign of that.

Collects for Christmas

Christmas Eve

Eternal God,

in the stillness of this night

you sent your almighty Word

to pierce the world’s darkness with the light of salvation:

give to the earth the peace that we long for

and fill our hearts with the joy of heaven

through our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Christmas Day

God our Father,

whose Word has come among us

in the Holy Child of Bethlehem:

may the light of faith illumine our hearts

and shine in our words and deeds;

through him who is Christ the Lord. Amen.
